There are numerous threads highlighting the issue with font awesome and the extra weight it loads by loading numerous icons that are not required. There does not appear to have been much movement towards addressing this (eg to inline SVG icons etc).
I have been attempting to create a font awesome subset based on what is used on my site but am having trouble getting it to be enqueued when I disable the inbuilt fontawesome css as there are numerous font families etc.
Is there a guide or advice on how best to hack this to address this performance issue (in absence of this being addressed by the development team)?

@asti it is certainly discussed there but that is far from guided instructions. That is mentioning disabling FA css and adding the snippet (though one would assume the css should also work added to the customiser). These steps do not seem to work and I suspect there are required steps missing for me. Can you provide more details/guidance at all?
