I want to allow comments only for a few days then lock the comments section - if I do this, will the comments still show, minus the ability for new users to comment?

Hi @agentrosehq,

You should use the "Automatically close comments on posts older than X days" option. The option is located in the Dashboard > Settings > Discussion admin page.
