Am I right in thinking a new user who wants to comment needs to register on the site or login with social?
for registering on the site it uses the normal Wordpress register page? Are there any options to customise the register page? Eg add text or extra questions.

You can change the login URL in the Dashboard > wpDiscuz > Settings > User Authorization and Profile Data tab.

The login phrase can be changed to register in the wpDiscuz Phrases section.
That is you can change the login phrase to registration and change the login URL.
