i was able to leave one comment before i suspected i changed a setting to not make it work anymore, uninstalled and reinstalled but still same blank box error and no comment posted.
How to delete all settings on uninstall??

Its fixed now. I had code in functions that blocked non admin from accessing wp-admin

That's how my theme uses avatar.
wpDiscuz uses native WordPress get_avatar() function, so you can use the hook to get your issue resolved.Â
