On GTMatrix and PageSpeed Insights are showing that my Gravatars are not being cashed.

I have caching enabled and I want to use cron job as the method.

Please advise.

There are two methods of Gravatar caching:

Runtime – avatars are being cached on the first-page load, this method slows the first-page loading, but images are cached immediately. Cron job – images are being cached every 3 hours (by default).

So in your case, you should use the Runtime method.

Changing to 'runtime' didin't not work and I'm still getting too many request as you can see in this screenshot.

I would like to use cron job as the caching method.

Please advise how to fix this.
