[#11315]

I have had a Wordpress.com hosted site running for 10+ years without any plugins or problems until a few days ago when I installed my first plugin, wpDiscuz plus 4 of your addons: User Notifications, Advanced Likers, Comment Search, and Embeds.

I do not know if the problems I am seeing are caused by changes WordPress made to support plugins, or by some problem with wpDiscuz. I do not think the problems were caused by your addons because I saw the problems before I purchased and installed the 4 addons.

Symptoms:

  • logged in users lost black bar at top of page with WordPress notification
  • users reported problems logging in with broken connection between WordPress and Jetpack (as admin I did not see this problem)
  • I see a new version of users with same name/email in the comments admin page after they posted a comment: one user with # comments after plugin install and one user with # comments before plugin install
  • logged in users display as Guest on their Likes
  • logged in users display correct name on their comments

A user discovered they could fix the WordPress/Jetpack login problem by clearing their browser cache after which:

  • the WordPress notification bar returned
  • new likes now correctly display the user’s name
  • old likes still incorrectly display Guest

In the comment admin page I now see 3 versions of users with the same name/email:

  • one with # comments before plugin install
  • one with # comments after plugin install
  • one with # comments after clearing browser cache to fix link between WordPress and Jetpack

Please advise how I can:

  • fix WordPress/Jetpack login problem without requiring all users to clear their browser cache
  • merge multiple instances of users back into one instance with correct total comments
  • fix the likes that are incorrectly identified as Guest

I do not know if this is a WordPress problem or a wpDiscuz problem. Let me know if you think I should be speaking with WordPress support.

Thanks for your help.

Hi,

I've forwarded this topic to our development team. I'll update this topic soon.

In case you want to say thank you! 🙂
We'd really appreciate if you leave a good review on the plugin page.
This is the best way to say thank you to this project and the support team.

Here is some additional information that I received from Wordpress.com support.

They inform me that this problem was probably caused by wpDiscuz and that you have sufficient access to my database to fix it.

Here are my questions and their answers:

Why does Comments show duplicates with the same name/email?

The Comments screen isn't actually a user directory - it's a view over the comments database. We store comments in two ways: linked to a real user account (via a user ID), or as a "guest" comment with just name/email fields. When wpDiscuz was installed, it likely started saving some logged-in users' comments as guest-style (without a proper user ID), which makes the same person appear as multiple "authors" in the admin view. No actual duplicate accounts were created.

How could wpDiscuz cause this?

On WordPress.com sites, login state is handled differently than a classic WordPress install. wpDiscuz may not have correctly detected that users were logged in, so it recorded some comments without attaching them to the right user account.

Does wpDiscuz have enough database access to fix it?

Site admin actually do have database access via phpMyAdmin - you can find that under your hosting settings. Whether wpDiscuz can offer a fix depends on how they've built their tooling within those limits and they would be the best place to get clarification on that since they built this plugin.

You could also grant a wpDiscuz support rep temporary admin access to your site if needed via Invite People.

Another update on my discussions with WordPress customer support.

They now acknowledge this problem was caused by them and not by wpDiscuz.

Thanks, Rob
