Hello:

Let me start by singing the praises for your commenting system. I am so grateful to have a feature-rich alternative to platforms like Disqus. There are, however, some features found on other platforms that wpDiscuz does not seem to have, as of yet.

Our members often paste links to external gifs with the help of your Embeds add-on. Depending upon the size of the source file, and the number of embedded gifs members add on a given discussion, page loads can severely bog down as the site pre-loads all the gif frames.

In order to help improve site performance and enhance the online experiences of those who are interacting with your commenting system, I would ask that you please consider updating the Embeds add-on so that only the first frame of each gif will load and render, with an overlaid play/stop button. This will also allow end users to only watch the gifs they want to see, and cut back on visual noise as people scroll through comments.

Cheers,

DM

Please note all questions related to paid addons should be asked in the gVectors.com forum. Here we only support issues related to the free wpDiscuz plugin.

Hi again, Asti:

Before you close this, I wanted to check with you, as the feature I'm hoping to see implemented might actually be at the core level of wpDiscuz.

I'm referring to adding play/pause controls to any gif that is pasted as a url into a comment, not a case of uploading a gif file or linking to a specific gif site that has a fixed library of images. So just as someone could paste the url of a jpg file and the comment system would render it, all I'd like to see is for the system to recognize the .gif file format and when it comes time to render it in the comment, it would display only the first frame, along with a play/pause button overlaid on top. That way, when the page loads, even large gifs won't bog it down because the page is only loading the first frame.

I had originally thought this was something that would tie into the Embeds add-on, but I don't think so. That's more for specialized sites such as X.

Can you give me your opinion on this? Would such a feature be part of the core wpDiscuz plugin itself?

Thanks

The Tenor GIFs Integration and Giphy Integration addons have such an option. You can use it.

If you want to customize the core plugin, contact us via sales[at]gvectors.com email address. Currently, we have paid plugin customization and custom addon development services at the gVectors Team. They can assess the work and create it for you.

Hi Asti, I have tried the Tenor and Giphy add-ons and turning off autoplay in the settings doesn't appear to have any effect upon gifs that are hosted elsewhere on the net. I find Tenor and Giphy to be too limiting and none of our members ever used those sites. I just want to have a similar switch to the "Autoplay GIF animations on comments" that is somewhere in the wpDiscuz settings.

This isn't something that I want to pay for, as I think it may be of interest to other wpD users out there. As such, this is just a request for you to consider adding this feature somewhere in your comment engine, sometime in the future.

I'm sorry, but this requires significant changes to the plugin code and cannot be implemented in the near future.

Hi Asti, I totally understand. If you guys could add it to your "maybe" list for future updates, I would appreciate it.
