Question Unicode emoji being replaced by URLs pointing to svg files

A website I comment on regularly uses wpdiscuz and recently any unicode emoji I insert into a comment is immediately replaced by a URL pointing to an svg file. Can you please advise what might be causing this so I can pass the info along to the site owner.

You should use the emoticons HTML entities not copy the emoticons.

Okay, but it used to accept the unicode emoticons just fine. Has something changed recently in wpdiscuz? Why is it replacing them with those urls?

@croissant,

This works in the case of the textarea, but not for the rich editor.  If you disable the rich editor it'll work as you need.

Well, can the editor be switched to textarea by the user because I see other people inserting unicode emoji just fine? See the EU flag in this comment:
